The fantasy that no one says out loud is … SEPARTISTS do not OWN the Province of Alberta. Canadians living in Ontario dont own Ontario. SEPARTISTS can leave Alberta if they hate CANADA that much. Danielle Smith can leave FIRST, straight to Maralogo. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
Not only assuming they own the province but that they have more of a say on whether I am a Canadian citizen than I do, while screaming about "freedom".
Why does Norway have an oil wealth fund now worth $2 _Trillion and Alberta doesn't?
Could it be the same reason that the UK does not have an oil wealth fund the same size as Norway's even though Norway and UK share the _very _same NorthSea oil field?
Alberta and UK -- both led by "Conservatives" -- sold out their oil rights for a pittance while Norway negotiated steely-eyed royalties that have amassed a fund now worth $340k per Norwegian citizen.
KayDee: That is one thing. Another thing is the pittance Alberta gets for royalties for the oil that isn't even the province's anymore, thanks to Ralph Klein's foolishness, has lost Alberta nearly $600 billion. The same Ralph Klein was lax with oil companies cleaning up after themselves. We now are saddled with a $320 billion expense. The lie is still there that Ottawa or Quebec took our money.
Sadly, Peter Lougheed didn’t like the perceived overreach of the NEP that PET proposed. It is basically what the Norwegians used as their model for their oil wealth.
Yup, Canadian conservative politicians are myopic as all get out.
What's in all of this for Danny? I'm just not sure what her game plan is, all along she has been appeasing the Seppies and paving the way for them with gold and playing along. When I heard her answer during the government announcement yesterday, I nearly choked, she finally says what we have been saying. We all knew it was impossible financially and hardly feasible theoretically. So why did she play along all this time? What did she gain? Better yet what changed her tactic? It simply just can't be now the light bulb went on, or her supporter numbers are on the downside? What's to come now? So many questions..
She rode into power on the back of the separatist horse. They own her.
Only now does she start to utter the truth because her job has been to stoke the grievance flame and give the seppies a toe hold.
Now she tries to appear moderate and reasonable, like she’s governing for all Albertans, because she’s hedging that we’ll vote her out and she wants to keep the grift going.
And she saw the three latest polls with the NDP possibly winning the next provincial election. She needs to stay in power to spearhead the separatist plan but she is useless if she loses the election. What a conundrum!
Yup - with the Four Horsemen of the Seppaclypse (Davey P, Mitch, Denis and Jeff) riding hard at the head of the stampeding herd of sorely-agitated seppies measuring her for a noose.....
Concerned Canuck, I have a queasy feeling that Alberta's NDP voted the wrong leader in for our times in 2026. Sure, Naheed Nenshi was mayor of Calgary thrice. Sure, he was voted "World's Best Mayor". And sure, he navigated some pretty severe disasters during his times as mayor. However, the UCP is cruel and nasty. That's their nature. They'll do and say anything to put Mr Nenshi off guard, off balance, and off rails. He seems too NICE to survive their knives and cudgels, some of which will be literal.
David Stevens: Naheed Nenshi isn't the problem. The media is. Why? Because they flat out lie about the NDP, while glorifying the UCP and Danielle Smith. Postmedia is great at this. Their columnists were lying about Rachel Notley prior to the 2023 provincial election in Alberta, while giving the UCP and Danielle Smith a pass for their many missteps.
Agreed in part, Anonymous. I physically know some jerks in the UCP. Edmonton looks big, but it is a town. I fled because people I socialised with showed who they really were. They had masked effectively. I was taken in by their acts. I found out how vicious they are. Not to me (while I was present) but to some they'd been "friends" with.
As to media... THERE is the NDP's weak spot. They could, they should- they don't- control, absolutely OWN messaging, imaging, slogans. It is no longer costly. So... Why not?
I suspect she and her friends have invested in a leveraged manner to generate them maximum returns from the uncertainty this creates. She can cash it all in when she gets Panama.
She played both sides of the fence, was ambiguous about it and now she has to choose a side. Jeffery Rath is driving the bus here and it’s time he be taken to task and held to account for his actions. He’s lying and is it only in it for himself. I believe Danielle Smith should also be held to account too.
I think you're giving her too much credit. That light had a dimmer switch that just got cranked up a little when she finally looked at the numbers. She runs on narcissism and lack of self-awareness, or just general awareness for that matter.
Yes it will. I was just thinking about where I’ll be going if we get to that point. I am Canadian, born in Alberta, and have ZERO intention of staying in a separated AB.
The other thing most of us know/suspect… AB won’t remain sovereign, it’ll be usurped by the US, even though they’re broke/bankrupt, because they want our resources and don’t want to pay us for them.
What is hilariois in all this is if those dimwits in the UCP and previously, the Conservatives, had kept up with the Heritage Savings Ttust Fund, similar to Norway's Petroleum Wealth Fund, there would be billions possibly trillions like Norway, in it and could be used in their theatrical utopia of an independent Alberta. The separtists have oversold how much money we can produce and at what cost.
There was a great post the other day re what the NEP would have resulted in for Alberta citizens as it would have benefited the citizens more than the Provincial government. It also would have resulted in Canadian oil and gas companies operating here vs US. It would have built up our own oil and gas corporations benefiting all of us and as well resulted in our oil and gas not being sold under value and with higher royalties as the US corporations rip us off. It also provided data as to where the fund value would be today. Such a missed opportunity as it was being built on the plan to have a strong home grown CANADIAN oil and gas industry. Mulroney killed it. NEP was coming on board at the same time OPEC decided to throw their weight around as it is OPEC who controls the oil and gas pricing globally by their production decisions. Politicians have zero effect on oil and gas pricing unless they start a war … ie IRAN. When OPEC sees something they think will threaten their monopoly they start increasing or lowering production at affect the prices globally. I am certain they saw Canada’s plan as a threat to their dominance. Alberta would be on par now with Norway if NEP had proceeded.
A friend of mine's son did a thesis paper on this very topic!!! Wish I had seen the article you reference as I love reposting that stuff - separtists love repeating the mantra "NEP bad, Trudeau worse....."
Kay: Brian Mulroney got rid of the NEP in the 1980s. Ralph Klein reduced Peter Lougheed's extremely high oil royalty rates to Social Credit levels, and strapped us with a $320 billion price tag to pay for the cleanup of oil wells and the like, when the oil companies should have footed the cost themselves. Combine this with horrible corporate tax rates, and a long list of costly boondoogles, and we have nothing to show for it. Rinse and repeat with the UCP.
When I posted about this in Reddit, there was huge hostility from people who lost their shirt in the '80s. My ultimate takeaway was that the NEP was blamed because people needed to blame something and it was an easy target. Forget about the fact that the price of gas shot up and there was a recession at the time. I was a young person in Calgary at the time and it was heartbreaking to see all of these families walking away from their homes and, in a lot of cases, going back to their home provinces because there was nothing here for them anymore.
Something that I was told during the exchanges was that Canada had around 8 oil and gas refineries around that time and due to bureaucratic jiggery pokery they decided to deem oil in railcars that followed tracks that crossed the Canada/US border as "foreign oil" and subjected it to fees that ultimately contributed to the demise of Canada refining our own oil. I don't know how/why that would have happened, but talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face.
I lived in Montreal until the 1995 referendum and was then transferred to Calgary with a corporate move due to the Quebec Separatist referendum. Montreal had huge refineries.
Especially in light of IEA predicting steep decline in fossil fuel needs by 2030. This is 2026. Iran war is reigniting the rush to electrify globally. Countries want to be energy independent so they are free from having to rely on foreign countries. China and the Global South are eons ahead of North America.
China is working with other countries to ramp up their grids and electrification as well.
Here's whats going down - yer lunch-box droppin'/thermos smashin' seppie drooler would do the math ($91, 567 per Alberta citizen - though I don't know where a child or retiree would be able to cover $91, 567....but ta hell with the details), nod "Uh Huh dat works for me uh huh" and then automatically think future O&G royalties will cover their nut.
That be the seppie notion of "social credit" - I guess.
The whole fetid bag of bad thinking, worse wishing, ennui, sloth, red-slipper-heel-bangin', vitamin-k snortin' delusion and fantastical financial Munchausen's around 'Berduh separation is breathtaking.
I do so hope the rest of Canada is killing themselves laughing at the foolishness of this whole sorry UCP self-inflicted fandango. Even if Duh-duh-Danielle can steer her holed-below-the-waterline political arson project to a safe port, her rando libertarian authoritarian assholery on every other file continues unabated. How much more wreckage can she inflict on this province?
I'm eyeing the exits myself - I'm just about at the point of appearing in public wearing a paper bag over my head (like a Leaf's fan), too embarrassed to be identified as an Albertan.
PS - redid the maths - lets assume 30% of the 'Berduh population are seppies, that means their "Get-outta-Canada" nut increases to some 300K per - 'cause the remaining 70% of Canadians in Alberta will be double-dipped in sheep shit before they pony up a single loony for the seppies skeevy land grab. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh the stupid burns! It burns!
What if crying fire after setting the blaze suddenly caught up to you?
What’s changed?
Well Dennis Modry caught stealing over a million dollars from an uncle with dementia, Mitch Sylvestre and his King Charles is out to kill me among one of his more palatable conspiracies and of course Boss Hogg Rath up on more issues before the Law Society despite her passing her bogus Peterson act.
So the three at the forefront of the apocalypse are beyond highly suspect. Add to that her close friend David Parker named in the voter data scandal.
Cooperation federally pays benefits, who knew. Well all of us actually.
Costing about a transition coming out and I do not think the $400B comes remotely close to capturing costs
Losses so far are not accounting for lost opportunity or future costs of money. What is assured is that the Talibangelicals will get their wish to drive us back to the 1950’s.
So why now is she suddenly trying to jump the shark. Because she’s lost her base, thinks playing nice with real Albertans will keep her in her seat.
Wrong Dani, wrong again. We all see you for the opportunistic grifter you are. Your loyalty is not to us but to you.
We’re all about to show you the door
As they say in your chosen country Mrs Moretta- adios
It is actually far higher … not sure she factored in Alberta’s share of the Canadian debt plus all the downstream effects. Lost corporations. Lost investment. Mass exodus of the population who are Canadian.
You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time," is most famously attributed to Abraham Lincoln
And the gaslighting continues as there is no way Alberta would more prosperous outside Canada. Seniors pensions would likely have to be discontinued, the CPP is well and better run than Alberta could ever do and oil doesn’t last forever especially with a decline in demand
Based on the history of previous separatist movements, this is the reality check that brings soft-separatists back to reality. Policing? Military? Currency? Customs? National debt? Trade agreements (including with Canada)? Etc. Etc.
Will your children & grandchildren be better off after all of this? Certainly not.
Danielle Smith is a charlatan. A conwoman. Someone who wants all the cake; whether she eats it or not doesn’t matter, as long as no one else has any cake.
She wanted to get as much as she could, as fast as she could, from whom ever she could, and for as long as she could.
Selling the fantasy of the ideology is the only real and certain way of selling that much snake oil to so many people. She’s no better than a two-bit carnival hustler, only the carnival never left town; no escape on a midnight train. Now here she is, left holding the bag. Let the tap dancing begin.
And those separatists that never bothered asking the important questions up front but rather believed that the snake oil would make them FEEL better, and are now being told that the ingredients are that of their own oil-sands? Well, they can’t accept that they’ve been duped and misled in the most despicable and destructive way, so they have to double down. Continue to believe the con because the truth is actually painful.
Danielle Smith and her enablers should be prosecuted and punished for their crimes.
I'm curious to why a 500B loan from the US was mentioned in the separatists' dialogue at some point. Was that just propaganda to keep them on the hook?
Ms Smith is watching the writing on the wall..lol..she's a chameleon who will say anything and I mean anything to stay in power...she saw the mood shifting and the economics became clear and said what everyone already knew...the damage that's already been done in Ab is her legacy..don't let her slither out of the responsibility of her own corruption...

Not only assuming they own the province but that they have more of a say on whether I am a Canadian citizen than I do, while screaming about "freedom".
JOANNE HARDIE: An excellent comment.
Question for Albertans:

Conservatives are short-sighted and will sell everything for parts for instant gratification. Governing and planning isnt their forte.
Because conservative Premiers starting with Getty started to use it for operations and politically motivated capital projects. It hasn't stopped
KayDee: That is one thing. Another thing is the pittance Alberta gets for royalties for the oil that isn't even the province's anymore, thanks to Ralph Klein's foolishness, has lost Alberta nearly $600 billion. We are Canadian. Alberta is family.
Mess with them at your own risk.

Exactly. Playing both sides of the field.
As she always has.
And she saw the three latest polls with the NDP possibly winning the next provincial election. She needs to stay in power to spearhead the separatist plan but she is useless if she loses the election. What a conundrum!
Totally. She put herself into this place.

Yes I am afraid Nenshi might not be up to the task. Rakhi Pancholi has shown flashes of spirit though. Someone as fiery as Notley would be a bonus
We are feeling the same.

They should not get a free pass.
Many questions need to be answered.
There are no questions that will be answered. All the UCP will do is lie to retain power. Just like they lied to get elected.
I think you're giving her too much credit. That light had a dimmer switch that just got cranked up a little when she finally looked at the numbers. She runs on narcissism and lack of self-awareness, or just general awareness for that matter.
Judi Udahl: Danielle Smith runs on emotions, and not on facts. The facts have, and will kick her and the UCP in the butt. Big time.
"It is $400 billion. And Alberta only has a current population of 4,368,370 people, so do the math."
The denominator will decrease significantly if AB tries to separate. Math gets worse.
Most definitely. It won’t help as people leave as well.
Yes it will. I was just thinking about where I’ll be going if we get to that point. I am Canadian, born in Alberta, and have ZERO intention of staying in a separated AB.

Definitely a chameleon.
Alberta needs a First Nation leader like Wab Kinew. Than watch Canada really thrive. Smith has already sold out Alberta to Trump.
